TRAIL MAINTENANCE:  Lopping Weeds, Clearing Blowdowns, Picking Up Trash

April 22nd, 2008 - Since it was Earth Day, Shannon and I decided to do a little trail maintenance.  We cut back weeds and briars on the Hampton Blue-blaze trail, and then continued cutting on our section of the A.T. toward Pond Mountain.  We didn't go all the way to the top as daylight was running out on us, but we did go up to where the future relocations begin.  We also cleared one medium-sized blowdown on the way with the new Corona saw that I purchased today.  Corona saws are awesome in my opinion (with my experience using them on the golf course), and it did a great job as Shannon and I took turns cutting this ~12" diameter blowdown.  Upon returning to the car, we also picked up almost a full bag of trash... mostly at the parking area.

We had a good time even though we worked hard.  We talked with three thru-hikers, and also stopped to photograph some wildflowers along the way.  We logged 4 maintenance hours each, while hiking approximately 5.0 miles.
