October
21st - After visiting
Elk Falls and Jones
Falls I had plenty of daylight left so I decided to
make a stop by Carver's Gap (highway 143 from the
town of Roan Mountain) to check out the fall
colors on the grassy balds at Roan Highlands.
This was my 3rd time on the balds this year (see
also
here and
here). They are always a treat, and the colors and
views didn't disappoint me. I hiked up to
Round Bald and then on to Jane bald (both at 5825'
elevation). The wind was howling as it usually
does in this area, and I had to add some layers of
clothes to keep warm. I took the photos below
and sat on a rock for quite some time at Jane Bald
trying to pick out and name the surrounding
mountains. I arrived back at my car about 15
minutes before dusk for a beautiful 2.0 mile trek,
and an overall great day of hiking.
