January 15th (MLK Day) - I was off work and the kids were out of school so we took advantage of the mild weather to go in search of Dick Creek Falls in the Unaka Mountain Wilderness.  Shannon had to work so she missed this adventure.  :-(

We drove to Rock Creek Campground right outside of Erwin to begin our hike, and set out on Rattlesnake Ridge Trail.  This was a steep climb for the kids in some spots, but they did great.  After a few small stream crossings and about 1.2 miles with 700 feet in elevation gain we reached Dick Creek Gap.  Rattlesnake Ridge trail eventually goes to the Unaka Mountain Overlook from this point, but we veered off on another trail heading northeast.  From here it was downhill most of the way for approximately .8 mile until we reached Dick Creek.  We had to cross the creek at this point which then led us into a large "flats".  We considered hiking right along the edge of the creek from here, but the terrain and underbrush was too heavy so we got out the compass to figure out exactly where the falls were, and we hiked up a roadway (south) through the flats for about .3 mile.  Again by using the compass, we figured we were getting close so we headed through the forest in the direction of the stream, and eventually we could hear the falls.

The Falls were well hidden and tucked down in a small grotto-like ravine.  We carefully climbed down inside and stayed for a half hour or more, taking photos, eating lunch, and resting.  After climbing back out, we went around and found our way to the top of the falls.  This was also a little tough to get to, but was worth it to look down from above.

We soon decided it was time to hike back out as the weather was looking more and more like rain.  Luckily, we also found my water bottle on Rattlesnake Ridge that I'd lost earlier.

We arrived back at the campground just in time as it started to rain when we were getting in the car.  This was a fun hike for us, and the kids enjoyed it a lot.  They commented how they liked Dick Creek Falls even better than Laurel Falls.  I think the exploration of finding it and not knowing exactly where we were going that added to the overall allure.  I estimate that we hiked 4.6 miles round trip.  We celebrated by stopping off at Clarence's Drive-In in Unicoi to eat dinner and talk about our adventure.
